ITINERARY:

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Arrive to SJO at any time. Transportation arranged and provided from the airport to your homestay in Santa Ana. Participants who've arrived and settled in by 4p can enjoy an orientation walk around the town with your guides. Enjoy the day and evening to get to know your welcoming family, the peaceful town and your fellow trip participants. You also have the option to arrange pre-nights in order to spend more time engaging with CRHF.

Meals: L, D

DAY 2: Engage & explore

After breakfast with your family, you'll be brought to CRHF's headquarters for an informative orientation seminar with the founder to provide cultural context to CRHF's overall mission and the communities in which they engage. And then it's time to dive in! Each of these first few days you'll be brought from your homestay to La Carpio -- a district outside of San Jose where the bulk of CRHF's efforts are concentrated. Community engagement on these days may vary from assisting with projects like helping to build retaining walls or painting houses, to participating in educational or sports initiatives with community teens, as well as possible creative projects like designing a mural or a community garden. Plenty of assistance, supervision, and trained management will be provided for all projects. Any and all specific skills, limitations, and requests of trip participants will be taken into consideration when deciding on community engagement projects.

In the afternoon following lunch, participants will enjoy an excursion to a nearby coffee farm situated in the beautiful hills of the Central Valley. There you'll be taken on a guided tour, learning about coffee farming and history in Costa Rica from planting all the way through roasting.

Meals: B, L, D

DAY 3-4: Engage & Explore

Each morning we'll continue to assist with projects throughout the first few hours of the day while gaining and in-depth understanding of the culture and communities of Costa Rica, and each afternoon we'll venture out to nearby excursions that will give participants a true taste of local living, cultural and historical knowledge, and the best that Costa Rica has to offer. Visiting with an indigenous healer, exploring a chocolate production plant, jungle or volcano hikes, visiting an animal rescue center, and nearby zip-lining are just some of the option that you may choose to expe. Activities for these afternoons will be selected based on the group’s interests. Take these days as your opportunity to truly have it all -- meaningful connection within the community, as well as all kinds of interesting activities! All meals, transportation, and activities are included throughout these days.

Meals: B, L, D

DAY 5: Wrap up & head to the beach

On our final morning with CRHF, participants will enjoy an original theatre presentation crafted and performed by elders in the community, and a local crafts and artisan market.

Afterwards, we will depart for Playa Grande in a comfortable air-conditioned shuttle. During the 4-hour drive we'll stop for a quick lunch. When we arrive at the beach in the afternoon, you'll have time to settle in to your rooms and explore the small community a bit before enjoying the best show in town: sunset on the beach! Every day, locals and tourists alike gather up (perhaps with a cold beer or a happy hour cocktail in hand) to watch the sky light up at the end of another day in paradise. Options for dinner will be provided. During turtle season, those who'd like to join a guided nighttime beach tour to spot nesting sea turtles may do so this evening -- tours typically depart around 6p. You'll learn about the endangered sea turtles (including the Leatherback) that nest along these shores, and cross your fingers that you'll spot one (or more!) as you walk the beach at night with a local guide.

Meals: B, L

DAY 6: Unwind & choose your own Adventure

Your first day on the beach is yours to do as you like. Playa Grande is a peaceful and chill little community, perfect for connecting with locals at a slow pace (or in the waves at a fast pace!) After breakfast in the morning, you may opt to join a guided walk around the community with wildlife viewing and stops at local businesses along the way, as well as an additional excursion (when the tide is right) to nearby tide pools and a black sand beach (40 minute walk). Wandering around Playa Grande, don't be surprised to spot howler monkeys, iguanas, parrots, and all sorts of incredible jungle life!

Those who want to check out nearby Tamarindo and the shops and restaurants therein can do so by taxi or a 40-minute walk along the pristine beach and a quick water taxi across the estuary. Additionally or alternatively you may opt to spend part of your day learning to surf or boogie board in Playa Grande's waves, or simply wile away the hours relaxing on the beach or in a hammock by the hotel's pool. Many other optional activities are available to you in the area as well. In the evening, we'll all gather together for a group dinner at a delicious local restaurant.

Meals: B, D

DAY 7: Sail away!

The morning is again yours to relax or adventure as you prefer. A recommended optional morning activity would be to take a guided kayaking tour up the estuary to spot wildlife and envelop yourself in the serene mangrove jungle. Surf or boogie boarding lessons or rentals are also a great option, as well as any other options from day 6.

After your lunch, we will meet at the hotel where we'll be picked up and whisked 30 minutes up the coast to Playa Flamingo's harbor. From there, we'll board a Catamaran Sailing boat and cruise up the incredibly scenic coast for the afternoon, keeping our eyes peeled for dolphins, rays, and maybe even whales! We'll anchor in a calm harbor where snorkeling equipment, instruction, and a guide will be provided to help participants gain a peak into the incredible underwater world beneath. Afterwards, a light dinner is provided on board. Before heading back to shore, we'll enjoy our last sunset all together while drifting in the open ocean.

In the evening upon our return to Playa Grande, recommendations to enjoy your final evening in paradise include checking out community music performances at local businesses, or heading to Tamarindo to enjoy the bustling nightlife that lasts til morning!

Meals: B, D

DAY 8: DEPARTURE

You may depart at any time this day. A shuttle from Playa Grande to Liberia Airport (about an hour away) is provided. If you've opted to fly out from SJO then we can help you arrange transportation there via shuttle (about 4 hours) or a local flight from Tamarindo (recommended).

We can happily help you arrange further nights in Playa Grande to extend your stay!

Travel Insurance
Trip protection-style travel insurance that includes travel medical coverage is required for all trips with Traverse. The coverage must have a minimum $200,000 of medical coverage and include injury, medical, evacuation, and repatriation. Most domestic US health insurance plans do not cover international travel claims or provide a global network of contracted doctors and facilities. We want to make sure you are covered in case of an emergency or non-emergency illness or injury while abroad. Trip protection coverage protects the investment of your trip, including benefits for items such as trip interruption, trip cancellation, delays, baggage and personal effects, and more. We do not have a required coverage amount, but typically coverage is based on your trip costs. We partner with Wanderwell, a B-Corp Certified provider who can offer both Travel Medical and Trip Protection. If you choose to purchase through Wanderwell, you can buy the trip protection directly from our Traverse Journeys partner page provided in your Welcome Pack, and a portion of your purchase will be donated to WeForest through 1% For the Planet to aid with carbon offset for your trip. With Wanderwell, the TripProtector Classic and TripProtector Preferred plans meet our minimum requirements for coverage. Once insurance is obtained, a copy must be sent to Traverse. Failure to provide proof of insurance within 30 days of booking will result in trip booking suspension until proof of insurance has been provided.

Documents, Personal Identification, Vaccinations
Traveler is responsible for all required travel documents including passport, visas, entry or exit fees, and vaccinations. Traverse does not cover the cost or assist in obtaining any of the above, and reserves the right to collect information on all.
