Cooking + Yoga Retreat in Mexico: Review

Blogger and avid traveler Brian Oliver joined us in Mexico and here’s what he had to say about the retreat!

For many people visiting Mexico, specifically those going on a beach vacation, the last thing that comes to mind is cooking or engaging in any kind of physical activity. Many flock to resorts for relaxation and sunshine along with the usual drinking and partying.

Having already explored a variety of destinations in Mexico, I would have never thought to put yoga and cooking together in this country. However, the opportunity presented itself to take part in a cooking and yoga retreat in Mexico with Traverse and I am so glad that I agreed! From the moment I arrived in the beautiful state of Guanajuato, Mexico, I knew that the next six days would be nothing short of amazing. Despite having only done yoga a few times in my life, I knew that the other aspects of this trip would make it all the more interesting. 

As my shuttle made its way through the hills of the charming city of San Miguel de Allende, the elevation continuously increased and so did my anticipation. At the conclusion of my stay, my experience was absolutely awesome.


Here are my top reasons this Mexico trip is a must-do:

1. A wonderful stay in a boutique hotel, or posada 

With breathtaking views, a convenient location, and the most accommodating staff members one could ask for, I fell in love with our charming B&B. The rooms were decorated with antique Mexican decor, exposed stone walls, and views overlooking the colorful sites of classical San Miguel. 

It’s pretty easy to stay in the room and just rest all week, but of course, that’s not the reason for your visit. The daily home-cooked meals made with organic ingredients and served in the beautiful common area instantly made me feel at home. Some of my favorite dishes/foods were the quiches and fresh guacamole that could put any traditional chain restaurant to shame. You will leave Mexico feeling as if you’ve been visiting family members whom you have known all of your life.

2. The Yoga

I am by far not a yogi. In fact, I was a bit intimidated to learn that there would be daily yoga in the morning and evening each day of my trip. However, these fears were quickly put aside as our wonderful instructor made everyone feel comfortable. There is no age, level of fitness or body size that will stand in your way. Yoga is the perfect start of the day and a much welcomed ending activity after exploring and indulging in the culture. 

My personal favorite moment of yoga was the closing ceremony. This intimate time of reflection and bonding brought our group even closer together. Simply put, this retreat isn’t complete without yoga.


3. Freshly prepared Mexican Food and Cooking Class

During the retreat, the one thing no one would begin or end their days with was an empty stomach. Each morning started with a tasty breakfast ranging from locally sourced produce and dairy to fresh beverages. The same applies in the evenings when dinner is provided. Our local chefs made sure that everyone had satisfying meals while accommodating any dietary restrictions and allergies. 

My most memorable meal was the one that we all helped contribute to. Our expert local chef brought the local market to us as we learned the names and origin of fresh chilies, herbs and spices, and other seasonal ingredients. Understanding which particular type of pepper produces certain levels of kick and intensity taught me when to have water and tissue on hand while dining out. After a detailed lesson and collaborative effort in prepping and cooking, everyone enjoyed a traditional Mexican meal. I whisked egg whites so long that my wrist caught a cramp, but the taste of stuffed peppers, prickly pears, and more made it more than worth it - margaritas included!

4. Guanajuato Day Trip

While there is absolutely no reason to have to leave San Miguel, a day trip to Guanajuato is a much welcomed change of scenery and pace from a more popular and expat filled town. This neighboring city is filled with numerous plazas, cobblestone streets, colorful buildings and colonial era architecture. It is the capital of the region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

With so much to see including the Diego Rivera Museum, as well as a Mummy Museum, taking the funicular up the hillside shouldn’t be skipped. The view from the top will amaze even the most seasoned explorer. Although busy at times, the city is very welcoming and safe.


5. Via Organica and Dos Buhos Winery Visit

In keeping with Traverse Journey’s responsible travel ethos, we made a visit to Traverse’s Community Partner, Via Organica. This tour of the organic farm presents guests with the opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture in the region and its important role in the local economy and environment. I had never seen so many live chickens in one place. 

Picking up the various eggs laid around the property was fun and an expected adventure also. I was even lucky enough to see fresh agave shredded and stored to begin fermentation. The visit concluded with a farm-fresh lunch on the property consisting of tasty soup and salad, tamales, and beans. The best part of the visit is that 3% of trip sales were donated to Vía Orgánica. 

Afterward, we indulged in local wine courtesy of the kind people of Dos Buho's Winery. The fresh cheeses and variety of wines made right on site were the perfect ending to a day spent supporting local businesses.


6. Cave Swim at La Gruta Spa 

What better way to spend the last full day of the trip than relaxing in the thermal cave pools of La Gruta Spa? It’s a place with various pools providing different water temperatures to suit whatever mood you’re in. You may want to stay all day while reflecting on your awesome time spent in Mexico over the week. With locals lining up early to enter, it’s no secret that La Gruta is not to be missed.
