Taking a solo travel trip is something that women should experience at least once in their life. However, deciding on a first-time solo female travel destination can be exhilarating and daunting at the same breath.

As experienced solo female travelers ourselves, we can tell you that there are some destinations that are easier than others when it comes to traveling alone as a woman. That’s why here at Traverse Journeys, a female-founded, sustainable tour operator, we want to empower women to take this first step.

Here are our recommendations for first-time solo female travel destinations to consider.

Best solo female travel destinations in Latin America

Solo travel in Latin America is often perceived as being a challenge for solo female travelers, due to language, machismo culture and safety concerns. However, Latin America is generally safer than one might think; the key is to be mindful of where - town, street, neighborhood, etc. - and when - particularly at night or in dark and deserted areas. It is quite a diverse region comprising 33 different countries, a vast range of climates and - as some might find comprising - one of the most linguistically diverse places in the world.

So the question is, should women even consider traveling solo to Latin America? The answer is YES. Here are a few of the best first time solo female destinations in Latin America:

Traverse Journeys Costa Rica Trip 2022

Costa Rica

Known as one of the happiest countries in the world, Costa Rica is the most popular tourist destination in Central America. Combining the Caribbean Sea with tropical rainforests, Costa Rica is ideal for anybody interested in tropical nature immersion experiences or sustainable and wellness activities. The country also borders part of the Pacific Ocean, making it the perfect destination for a beach getaway, One of the reasons why this country is ideal for first-time solo female travelers is because there is an abundance of spots throughout the country along popular routes that you can get to comfortably by public transportation or affordable tourist shuttles. Then when you get there you’ll find central gathering places - such as a cute centro, an eco-lodge, a yoga center, or a beachfront - that will immediately feel like you’ve stepped into a community.

Because of the country’s popularity as a tourist destination, Costa Rica boasts robust tourism infrastructure including bus routes and well-maintained roads, making the traveling experience quite comfortable and safe. Luckily for travelers, English is widely spoken in the country, so this makes it easier to communicate. Additionally, ticos (local slang for Costa Ricans) are extremely welcoming, warm and willing to help.

Chile

Laura in Chile, Patagonia

Located along the southeastern edge of South America, Chile is considered the most developed country in Latin America, which is one of the reasons why so many visitors want to experience its incredible nature and culture. The feeling of safety and comfort reminds many visitors of Europe, which stems from the interesting cultural fusion throughout Chile’s history between the many European settlers. As one of the most prosperous destinations in Latin America, Chile’s tourist areas offer many English-speaking activities. You’ll also find locals who speak other foreign languages here and there. You’ll also find gender dynamics more similar to the US with perhaps fewer cat calls and toned-down machismo. Chile is a destination that brings together amazing landscapes, cultural activities, and diverse history. Exploring the country is ideal for first-time solo female travelers to South America who want to experience a European-infused culture with, for example, museums in Santiago and vineyards outside the city.

Pro-tip: Clothing in Chile, like lots of cities in Latin America, tends to be both more classy and conservative. Instead of shorts, a tank top, and flip flops opt for a skirt or slacks, a nice blouse, and comfortable flats or sandals.

Dominica

If you are looking for a tropical island destination that has a remote and off-the-beaten-path allure, the Caribbean island of Dominica is your place to go. Unique nature-based activities, distinct cultural influences, and plenty of wellness-focused offerings can satisfy just about any traveler, and certainly anybody traveling solo.

This ‘Nature Island’ is quite safe to explore independently, though of course being mindful of how remote some of the trails and activities are is good to take into account. If you are considering a trip to the Boiling Lake, or any other long hiking route, check with local guides before doing so. As well, when swimming at the beach, ask locals about the situation for specific areas as some have stronger currents than others. Linking up with local guides - and in particular female guides! - for your explorations is not only a helpful safety tip but also a wonderful way to add more immersion and cultural connection to your experiences.

Pro-tip: Dominica has a plethora of women-led initiatives like herbal workshops and cooking classes that are not only a fun cultural experience but also support the local female community and economy.

Best solo female travel destinations in Europe

Europe is perhaps one of the more popular destinations for first time solo female travelers. Generally speaking, solo female travel is safe in Europe, and quite common. It is also rather accessible to travel between countries in Europe, due to the vast public transport system across the continent. There are also several solo-female-travel hostels across Europe, which allow you to meet other like-minded women traveling around Europe.

Croatia

Located across from Italy in Southeastern Europe, Croatia is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. Not only does the country boast pristine Adriatic coastline,  Roman and Austro-Hungarian architecture, and incredible nature, Croatia is extremely safe for solo female travelers. This is because Croatia has a very low crime rate, and is considered to be one of the safest countries in the world. It was recently named one of the safest cities in Europe for walking alone at night.

Also, since English is widely spoken, navigating Croatia is much easier compared to other European countries like France, Spain or, Italy. Croatians are also known for their hospitality, so you can always ask your accommodation owners, or shopkeepers if you need any help in Croatia. As a female, you’re quite likely to encounter other female travelers at your accommodations, on a city walking tour, or on a small group guided tour like this one.

Pro-tip: Love your athleisure wear? In Croatia, save those for your morning runs and yoga sessions and instead don a classy blouse, slacks or skirt, and blazer or scarf. Croatians love to dress up for nearly any occasion, even a coffee with friends, and showing up polished will have you truly fitting into the culture. And for a pro-pro tip, combine that with white sneakers to be comfortable and stylish while out exploring!

Iceland

Known as “The Land of Fire and Ice,' Iceland is a magical destination that attracts many solo female travelers. This is because Iceland is not only extremely safe, but it is also very common to see many solo female travelers venturing throughout the country.

Iceland’s landscapes by Jim Hill

Iceland is a road tripper’s paradise with an extensive range of unique activities like hiking glaciers, soaking in geothermal pools, and walking along beaches with black volcanic sands. Although the local language is quite distinct, almost all Icelanders speak fluent English, creating a great advantage for many solo travelers.

If the language is not a convincing point, keep in mind that Iceland has been the most peaceful country globally, according to the Global Peace Index, for the past 13 years. For solo female travelers, it’s especially comforting to know that if you’re driving alone across the country locals are looking out for you - from your accommodations to the café you stop in, to a local guide you might hire.

Pro-tip: Iceland has an abundance of female trekking guides, which can be less common in the tourism industry. If you’re thinking about a hard-core outdoor adventure such as a glacier or volcano hike, ask for a specifically female-led hiking guide - and you’ll be likely to get one!

Portugal

Portugal is a country rich in history and culture, filled with museums and delicious culinary experiences that combine together to create a unique trip. This southwestern European country is one of the safest locations in Europe, with violent crime being almost nonexistent and most locals being welcoming and open to help. The public transit infrastructure particularly in cities like Porto and Lisbon is quite good and reliable, making it easy and safe to wander and explore. There has also been an explosion of co-working spaces in the past years that have sister accommodations where you can rent a room (with or without a roommate) for an extended period of time if your work allows you to work remotely.

Pro-tip: Portugal has a number of solo female-friendly accommodations and co-working spaces such as Selina where you’re likely to find other like-minded females!

Ireland

Ireland is the land of a thousand welcomes due to its abundantly friendly culture. The Irish are globally recognized as some of the friendliest people in the world and well-known for being playful jokers, and “not taking themselves too seriously,” which has worked to their advantage when it comes to creating a strong tourism appeal.

For female solo travelers, Ireland is a dream destination, because it is relatively safe and the locals are so friendly and eager to help. Not to mention, the country exudes stellar nature and electric green landscapes, plus vibrant nightlife in the local pubs. Additionally, in an English-speaking country, many travelers have an easier ability to connect with locals and their culture. It’s almost impossible to come away from any trip around Ireland without a network of new Irish friends!

Pro-tip: Keep an eye out for sites dedicated to powerful female figures throughout Irish history such as Grace O'Malley's Castle in County Mayo (a famed pirate queen) or the Solas Bhride center near Kildare and sacred well near the Cliffs of Moher, both dedicated to the legendary Saint Brigid. It’s also interesting to note that across Ireland there has been a noticeable shift away from the traditional and patriarchal Irish Catholicism with much more spiritual and cultural emphasis being placed on nature, healing, and female empowerment.

More tips for your first time solo female trip

Based on our extensive experience traveling the globe, here are some more topics to keep in mind when planning your first solo female trip:

1 . Do your research. Once you have decided where to travel to, take into consideration that each country is quite unique and different and might require specific and detailed planning.

  • First of all, reach out to friends and family that might have traveled there, or even lived there. Getting to travel with a local, or through a local's recommendation is a great way to get a true insight into local customs, places to visit, and perhaps locations to avoid.

  • Second, learning a bit of the local language will come in handy when traveling solo. Although it is not impossible to travel to a country where you don’t know any of the languages, it might be an obstacle that can be helped by learning some keywords and phrases. As well, becoming familiar with the local language can actually transform your travels, and provide you with a much more immersive and comfortable experience.

  • Third, as responsible solo travelers, it is important to know and be aware of what to do and where to go in any type of emergency. Have prior information on police stations or hospitals near your accommodation.

2. Once landed at the destination. One thing is the planning, the next has to do with precautions. Start by giving your contact and accommodation information to a trusted person from your family or hometown.

Yes,  traveling is all about getting lost and finding adventure BUT, it is important to act as a responsible caretaker. Practice being extra aware and cautious after the sun goes down and be cautious of where you wander (avoid streets with bad reputations or that seem lonely). Finally, before you leave for any daily excursions, inform a trusted local or even the manager of your accommodation, and exchange contact information with them.

3. Join a small group tour! Traveling solo is an amazing experience when done right, however, we understand that it might be scary for first-timers. A good option to consider is to travel independently in a small group of like-minded people.

By seeking out a small group trip to join, you’ll still experience the thrill of an independent adventure by removing the comfort of familiar faces, and you’ll also enjoy downtime throughout the itinerary in which to wander freely. Yet, you’ll always know that others are keeping an eye on you, immediately aware of your absence if something doesn’t go to plan, and there to provide connection and shared experiences throughout your journey! It’s an ideal solution for female travelers who are eager to discover the world solo but prefer to feel as safe and comfortable as possible.
