We’ll kick off our retreat with a bonfire Welcome Dinner under the stars. Then, for our first morning prepare your heart for the ancestral wisdom of Día de los Muertos with a traditional cacao ceremony. Throughout the retreat, you’re invited to take part in traditional Día de los Muertos activities as you honor the land and traditions of Mexico as well as your own ancestral heritage. Enjoy daily yoga with Leti Alvarez in a beautiful oceanside yoga shala and explore the 20-acre permaculture farm filled with coconuts, mangos, greens and from where your daily meals are based along with other locally sourced ingredients. Each day allows you to take the pace you need to rest, recharge, and be inspired. Enjoy beautiful tree-house style common spaces with your journal and tea, swim or snorkel in the ocean, or opt for a spa treatment with local medicinal ingredients. You can also engage with the local community with add-on land and ocean-based activates such as village visits, a marine biodiversity tour, visit to a turtle sanctuary, visiting chocolate and coffee growers in the mountains, seeing local salt flats and much more. We’ll end with a special Día de los Muertos ceremony to honor our time together.

DAILY ITINERARY

Arrive at the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) by mid-afternoon and enjoy your 30 minute transfer to your eco resport. Settle into your casita, get out and explore the property and meet your roommate for the week.
We’ll kick off our retreat with a bonfire Welcome Dinner under the stars before we wind down with a grounding practice.

We’ll wake up not-too-early for a refreshing morning movement session before a tasty breakfast of healthful, local fare.
We’ll then prepare our hearts for the ancestral wisdom of Día de los Muertos with a traditional cacao ceremony. Throughout the retreat, you’re invited to take part in traditional Día de los Muertos activities as you honor the land and traditions of Mexico as well as your own ancestral heritage.

Day 3 (Sunday morning) Temazcal Ceremony: Experience a local indigenous purification ceremony in what is known as a Temazcal (originating from the Nahuatl word temāzcalli, “house of heat”, aka sweatlodge). Enter the handcrafted ceramic dome to sweat it out, set intentions, and connect with the earth and the fire, guided by a local female shaman who helped to create this sacred space. Offerings of ceremonial songs and flowers are made as the fire heats the interior.
Day 3 (Sunday afternoon) Petatlán Tour: Go see one of the local coconut candy factories in the neighboring town of Juluchuca, visit local schools. Then take a 15-minute ride over to Petatlán where you’ll visit the town’s church, check out the local mercado, and local crafts.

This morning after yoga you’ll have time for additional add-ons, perhaps going into one of the local villages to check out the local festivities.
Traditionally November 1st is the day that children that have passed are honored, and November 2nd is Día de muertos is the day to celebrate all of those that have passed. We’ll have opportunities today to share stories together as we participate in local activities as we honor those who have come before us. We’ll end the day with a closing ceremony together and another feast.

Day 4 (Monday) Sierra Mountain Excursion: Visit the local coffee and chocolate growers up the watershed in the mountains 1-hr by 4x4. Have a homemade meal with the family in their home and experience the country life of rural Mexico. Includes 4x4 rental, guides, and meals prepared on site. (4-hr excursion, approximately 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

Surf Lessons - Visit local surf spots appropriate for your skill level. Your surf instructor will pick you up and take you to the correct local surf heaven that fits your needs. Includes lessons, board rental and transportation.
Archaeological Site Tour - Just 20-minutes away lives a buried indigenous culture that was
only recently discovered. A new museum houses artifacts,
ceramics, jewelry, and weaponry made from local resources. You’ll be taken to the newly restored ball field as well as the current excavation sites. The area is known for its tobacco plantation - so you can learn how to roll your own cigar!
Bird Watching - Drive 45-minutes to Barra de Potosí, where the river collides with the sea to form one of this area’s largest estuaries. Discover a large number and variety of birds, mangroves and aquatic species. You will tour the lagoon in Araceli’s, your local guide, "panga" (flat bottom boat).
Marine Biodiversity Tour - Tour a major pacific wetland and pristine virgin coastline to see various terrestrial and marine wildlife, including birds, sea turtles, rays and dolphins (year round) and humpback whales (January through March). This excursion operates through one of our partners, Whales of Guerrero Research Project, and directly supports community-based conservation and an eco-sustained community.

While of course you're welcome to participate, you're welcome to hold back from the yoga or pilates sessions and just enjoy the cultural and adventure aspects of the trip - which are plenty!

Yes, absolutely! We collect your dietary restrictions prior to the trip and pass them on to all of our cooking and meal partners to ensure that you have the options you need.

It sure is! If you sign up solo, we’ll pair you with a roommate of your same gender. Or, you can select “my own room” if you prefer not to share.

LETI ALVAREZ
Leti began her yoga journey years ago and has remained deeply committed to living her yoga. She offers empowering, inspiring flows that encourage students to explore and connect with their deeper, authentic selves. Leti meets students exactly where they are and encourages them to embrace their unique experiences. Leti loves yoga for all its transformative powers –physical and spiritual - and emphatically knows yoga is her “health insurance.”

Deposit
A $500 non-refundable deposit is required for each traveler to secure the booking (varies by trip). 50% remainder due 30 days from booking. Balance due 60 days prior to trip start. Refer to the Flexible Booking Policy for cases in which the deposit may be transferrable.
Payment
Payments can be made either by 1) full payment on booking 2) Deposit on booking + payment schedule below. Payments will be invoiced via e-mail for credit card or Paypal payment online.
Cancellations Policy
Cancellations, less the trip deposit, are refundable up to 90 days prior to the trip start date unless otherwise specified.
Flexible Booking Policy Specific to COVID-19
In the wake of COVID-19, Traverse has implemented a flexible booking policy that allows for deposits and payments to be transferrable to the greatest extent possible to new trip dates should a recurrence of COVID-19 render travel impossible due to border closures and related travel restrictions.
Travel Insurance
The trip price does not include travel insurance. Trip protection-style travel insurance that includes travel medical coverage is required for all trips with Traverse. Documents, Personal Identification, Vaccinations
Traveler assumes complete and full responsibility for all required travel documents including passport, visas, entry or exit fees, and vaccinations. Traveler is also solely responsible for any adverse consequences resulting from incomplete or defective documentation. Traverse does not cover the cost or assist in obtaining any of the above, and reserves the right to collect information on all.
