There is something wonderfully unhurried about traveling through Romania. One moment you're wandering the elegant streets of Bucharest; the next you're surrounded by medieval towns, forested mountains and castles rising beneath the Carpathians. This six-day retreat brings together the culture, craftsmanship and landscapes of Transylvania with intentional time to slow down, reconnect and restore.
Begin in Bucharest, where you'll settle into the city and share a welcome dinner featuring traditional Romanian cuisine. From there, travel north into the Carpathian Mountains, visiting the spectacular Peleș Castle and exploring the medieval streets of Brașov. You'll learn about the region's Saxon heritage, step inside the magnificent Black Church, and spend an afternoon with a local artisan learning the centuries-old tradition of Romanian egg painting.
As the journey continues, the landscape becomes wilder. Walk beside Lake Saint Anne, Romania's only volcanic crater lake, and explore the forests and volcanic terrain of the Eastern Carpathians. At your mountain resort, the pace shifts again: each day enjoy yoga and breathwork with plenty of time for the spa, forest walks, optional treatments or simply doing nothing at all. A private sound-healing session offers another opportunity to settle into the quiet of the mountains.
The journey concludes with two remarkable pieces of Transylvanian history: the UNESCO-listed Prejmer Fortified Church, built to protect Saxon communities during times of conflict, and Cantacuzino Castle, a spectacular early-20th-century residence set against the Bucegi Mountains.
Led by Kim & Jeri, this is a retreat designed around balance: enough exploration to feel genuinely immersed in Romania, and enough space to actually experience the restorative side of being away. You'll leave with a deeper connection to the country's history, traditions and landscapes, and hopefully with a little more room to breathe, too.
Join our 6-day Romania Retreat from June 5–10, 2027, starting at $4,995 per person.
why this trip?
Romania is a destination that rewards curiosity. Its history is layered, its landscapes are remarkably varied, and many of its traditions are still part of everyday life. This retreat gives you the time to explore those layers while also creating space to slow down and reconnect.
Culture here is something you can experience with your senses. In Brașov and the surrounding villages, you'll encounter the legacy of Transylvania's Saxon communities through medieval streets, fortified churches and historic architecture. In nearby Bran, you'll meet a local artisan and learn the traditional technique of Romanian egg painting, using wax and natural motifs connected to the region. It's a small, hands-on experience that offers a window into a craft passed from one generation to the next. From the traditional Romanian welcome dinner in Bucharest to a hands-on cooking class, the journey introduces you to the country's culinary traditions through shared experiences rather than simply restaurant visits.
The landscape tells another part of the story. Traveling from Bucharest into the Carpathians, you'll move from elegant cities and historic castles into forests, volcanic terrain and mountain landscapes. At Lake Saint Anne, you'll walk beside Romania's only volcanic crater lake, then continue into the Eastern Carpathians for forest walks, forest bathing and exploration of natural features including the Sulfur Cave and Alum Grotto.
Traveling with Kim & Jeri gives the retreat a thoughtful rhythm between exploration and restoration through breathwork, yoga and somatic practices. Spend time at the spa, walk through the surrounding forest, book an optional treatment, or find a quiet place to read and take in the landscape. A sound-healing session with a local practitioner brings the experience together, connecting travelers with the local community and rhythm of the region.
Travel with Purpose. Every Traverse Journeys departure includes a contribution to a carefully selected Community Partner, supporting local organizations creating meaningful impact in the destinations we visit.

Kim Richter and Jeri Schlickbernd bring two complementary perspectives to the retreat experience. Kim is a breathwork facilitator and holistic coach whose warm, intuitive approach helps create a welcoming space for exploration, while Jeri is a mindset coach and facilitator who works with energy, spiritual practices, and tools for greater awareness and intention.
Together, they create a dynamic retreat experience that balances breathwork, mindset, movement, reflection, and connection. Their approach is flexible and responsive rather than prescriptive, allowing the practices to evolve naturally alongside the adventures we're experiencing in Iceland.
Kim and Jeri bring a genuine enthusiasm for creating meaningful group experiences - and for helping people step outside their usual routines, try something new, and see what becomes possible when they do.
