How to take a Dominica Holiday

So where exactly is Dominica? Situated between Guadeloupe and Martiqine in the Caribbean Islands, this small island is a true gem among the Caribbean Sea.  With new direct flights from Miami to Dominica through American Airlines, this off-the-beaten-path destination is now more accessible and easy to get to than ever.

Unlike other resort destinations in the Caribbean, Dominica offers a much more authentic and immersive travel experience. This is definitely an ideal destination if you want a combination of adventure and relaxation (like we offer on our Dominica jungle island retreat!)

Here are 5 things to do while on holiday in Dominica:

Take a dip in the hot springs in Dominica

Dominica is home to many amazing natural hot springs found in the middle of the rainforest. These are from a geothermal activity from nine different volcanoes. Some might require a small hike and they are often found clinging next to rivers, waterfalls, and volcanic terrain. Here are some of the top hot springs.

Soufriere Hot Springs

  • Soufriere Hot Springs and Beach

The quaint and charming village of Soufrieres features some lesser known, yet amazing hot springs in Dominica.   Tucked away and mostly known only to the locals, you can venture just outside the village onto Dominica’s famous Waitukubuli National Trail before being greeted by the local hot springs along the hiking trail in the running creek.  Sheltered on the side of the hill amongst the tree, this is a great place to relax and enjoy the warm waters in nature.

Whether you’re headed to the hiking trails from Soufriere or off to the coast, this little village also has naturally occurring bubbles from the thermal energy and natural hot springs under the sea, thus naming the local beach, “Bubble Beach”.

  • Ti Kweh Glo Cho Spa

As one of the most popular volcanic hot springs, Ti kweh glo cho translates to “little corner of the water” in Creole. It is nestled on top of the village called Wotten Waven. It has gained so much popularity because of its multiple springs with different temperatures and private bathtubs in the middle of the forest. Each visitor can stay as long as they desire for only $10 and enjoy the local bar and snack station.

  • Wotten Waven & the Trafalgar Falls

Situated in the Roseau Valley, you will find the majestic Trafalgar waterfalls. These twin waterfalls, one being quite taller than the other, are one of the island’s most popular natural attractions. They are both tributaries of the Roseau River and are in charge of generating hydro energy in the surrounding communities.

From Trafalgar, it’s not far to reach the wellness village of Wotten Waven.  This local village has created a natural spa resort with geothermal hot springs and mud pools known for their medical properties amongst the lush surrounding forest.

  • Boiling Lake

This lake is a flooded volcanic fumarole, known for being the second largest of its kind in the world. The bubbling lake is 200 feet wide and surrounded by rocks from the molten magma. Its grayish-colored water is covered with low clouds of vapor, resembling something from another planet! From the lake, you have views overlooking the volcanic land, ocean, and Martinique island.

It’s a strenuous full-day adventure to hike to and from the lake.  However, those up to the challenge, will be gifted with the beauty and awe of both the jungle trails and vistas across the entire island!

Explore the waterfalls in Dominica (beyond Trafalgar)

Known for having 365 rivers traversing its lush landscapes, Dominica’s plentiful water sources create countless alluring and powerful waterfalls. While the iconic Trafalgar Falls is famous for good reason, you will be greatly rewarded if you get off the beaten path a bit.

Fun fact: did you know that swimming in waterfalls can expose you to negative ions that offer purification in the body that can combat stress in the body and strengthen the immune system?

Champagne Reef in Dominica

  • Champagne pool

A short distance from the Capital of Roseau, Champagne Beach offers a Dominica snorkeling experience like no other. The area is protected under the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve and is known for its mystical champagne-like bubbles erupting from volcanic thermal energy below. Bright coral, endless tropical fish, and even turtles can often be sighted, creating both an exciting and relaxing snorkeling adventure.

  • Scotts Head Marine Reserve

Located on the southern end of the island, Scott’s head is both a beautiful walk up to the lookout point and also an idyllic spot for snorkeling and diving in Dominica’s most picturesque bay. Scotts Head, also known as Cashacrou Peninsula, wraps around the south end of the bay, creating a barrier between the calm Caribbean Sea and the larger Atlantic Ocean. This remote and pristine area has been under protection since 1987 and is consistently ranked as some of the best diving in the world.

See whales in the wild

There is something to be said about witnessing the majesty and beauty of one of the world’s largest mammals. With its pristine bays and sheltered coastlines, Dominica is the perfect place for whales to inhabit and thrive.

Sperm whales in Dominica

  • The uniqueness of the year-round sperm whale population

Dominica stands out as a premier whale-watching destination due to its year-round sperm whale population. Dominica is the only country in the world where this happens.  With its healthy and idyllic coastline environment, it’s no wonder the sperm whales never want to leave!

Guests on this excursion are often rewarded with multiple up-close whale sightings and unique whale activities like breaching and fluking. The odd time when the whales may be difficult to spot,  the livelihood and excitement of the many Spotted and Spinner dolphins are sure to make an appearance.

  • Tips for booking a Dominica whale watching tour

When planning a Dominica whale watching excursion there are a few tips to know beforehand.  While sperm whales are present year-round, sightings are most common between November and March.  There are several options for whale watching tours through the turquoise Caribbean waters, and all whale watching operators must follow strict codes of conduct to minimize any negative impact on the whales' environments and ensure a long and healthy life for the whale population.

That being said, it is always advised to do additional research and make sure the operator is adhering to all rules and regulations to promote the sustainability of sperm whales.

Connect with nature and culture by staying at an Dominica eco-lodge

Not only is Dominica a great destination to immerse yourself in nature, it is also an ideal to practice responsible travel. This includes mindfully engaging with the environment, culture, and local people. One way to do all this is to stay at one of Dominica’s ecolodges.

During our 8-day Dominica trip, our group will spend the week at the incredible Dominica Ecolodge of Jungle Bay, overlooking Scott’s head and the Caribbean Sea.

  • Enjoy unique cultural activities

Dominica’s Eco-lodges often host several unique cultural activities you won’t find anywhere else.  The ecolodges will support and provide jobs for the local communities, which means having the knowledge and expertise from the ancestors and hosts of the region.

Jungle Bay is known for its cultural garden tours, traditional ‘Liming’ Dominican experience, and educational components of the local and Indigenous history of the island.  When locals are at the forefront of tourism, it not only supports the local economy, it also means travelers will have more immersive, enriched, and unique experiences from the people who know it best.

  • Learn about food, teas, herbs, and local specialties
Dominica has a rich and diverse environment boasting tropical fruits, robust root vegetables, delicious natural tea blends, and healing herbs. It’s nearly impossible to go through a walk in the forest or jungle without coming across some kind of plant that is edible, medicinal, or somehow tied into a local specialty. When staying at a top Dominica Ecolodge, the opportunity to learn about and often try many of the local foods or herbs is always available.

  • Indulge in spa treatments and yoga classes

Arguably the best way to end a day of exploration on the island is with a relaxing spa treatment or yoga class. A luxurious spa treatment from one of the many professional and local massage therapists with locally crafted massage and essential oil blends is the perfect way to slow down and relax into the evening.  Or, perhaps a morning vinyasa flow or candle-lit restorative yoga practice is what the body needs.  After a hiking excursion or time spent out in the water, a slow flow practice after the setting sun can be the perfect opportunity to rest and restore the body and mind.
